BASEBALL Sam Sadler and Garrett Levsen teamed to throw the first no-hitter in PLNU history, holding held Fresno Pacific hitless in the second game of a doubleheader on April 12 to lead PLNU to a 2-0 victory. Sadler, a sophomore from Fullerton, pitched the first 6.2 innings, striking out four. He ran into some trouble in the top of the seventh after loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter, but Levsen came in to record the final out to seal game and earn the save. This was the first combined no-hitter and its first since Kenny Houser tossed a no-no against Vanguard in 2008. FOUR SEA LION GOLFERS EARN ALL-PACWEST HONORS Samantha Stockton, Kathleen Crossley and Andrea Mersino highlighted PLNU’s performance at its first-ever Pacific West Conference Women’s Golf Championship as all three were named to the All-PacWest team. Stockton led the way as she earned first team All-PacWest honors after finishing fourth at the tournament with a 17-over 161. Mersino and Crossley will each take home third team All-PacWest honors. Mersino tied for 15th and Crossley grabbed a tie for 18th place. Oscar Casillas represented the men as he shot a 9-over 153 at the PacWest championships. He tied for 13th to earn the Sea Lions’ first-ever All-PacWest honor in men’s golf. BASEBALL STREAK EXTENDS TO 8 The PLNU baseball team earned its first-ever four-game sweep of a PacWest opponent as it took all four games at home from Fresno Pacific. The Sea Lions then went on the road the next weekend and swept Holy Names in the Bay Area. The eight straight wins for PLNU guaranteed that the Sea Lions (25-21, 21-11 PacWest) will finish the year with at least a .500 record. The winning streak also pushed Point Loma from a tie for fifth place in the conference standings into sole possession of third place, just two games back of second place Cal Baptist. The .500 record also means that the Sea Lions are now eligible for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) regional playoffs, which will start May 9. PLNU HOSTS SPECIAL OLYMPICS FOR 20TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR Point Loma Nazarene University hosted a Special Olympics regional event for the 20th consecutive year on April 6. Point Loma welcomed numerous Special Olympic athletes to compete in track and field. The Special Olympic athletes competed in events ranging from the standing long jump to the shot put and the 400m dash. The Special Olympics event was sponsored by the Family and Consumer Sciences and the Department of Education at PLNU, but it is the student leadership that annually drives the event according to Jim Johnson, event director and instructor in the Department of Education. “The secret is we have a student leadership team that does everything for the event and which we are progressively building on for the next year,” said Johnson. “I’m basically a facilitator and give my signature where I need to, but it is the student leadership team that does everything. They handle publicity, they gather donations, they set up the website and they coordinate the volunteers. All of it is done by students here at Point Loma.” There was also members of the volleyball team, basketball team and cheer squads in attendance.  “The Special Olympic athletes just love the student-athletes from Point Loma,” said Johnson. “They are talking to them about pumping iron, saying ‘I have five medals. How many do you have?’ It is a dynamic relationship and it is very cool.”
