Point Loma Nazarene University has tapped university alumnus Mark Marney as its new community development director. As director, he will serve as a liaison between the surrounding community and the city.
Although currently an East County resident, he said he has worked closely with the school on various projects over his 10-year tenure as a project manager with the city.
As Marney begins to settle into his new position, he said he wants to “continue to build on the positive relationship the university has with the community.”
He said he would draw on his experience working with the city to act as a point of contact for residents who have questions about the university’s future development projects.
” I’m being introduced to a lot of new people “¦ getting my feet wet right now. It’s going well, though. I’m excited about the opportunities,” Marney said.
He said he’s going to meet with the university’s president and other officials to develop goals and strategies for the department and university over the next few months.
As a project manager with the city’s Park Planning and Development Department, Marney helped develop the Sunset Cliffs Master Plan prior to the release of the final draft in 2005. He also worked as assistant golf operations manager with the city at Torrey Pines.
Marney earned a bachelor of science degree in landscape architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is a licensed architect in the state of California, according to a statement from the university. Marney earned a master of business administration from Point Loma Nazarene University, he said.
Founded in 1902 in Pasadena, Point Loma Nazarene University moved to Point Loma in 1973. It is a private nonprofit Christian university. It has locations in Arcadia, Bakersfield, the Inland Empire and Mission Valley in San Diego.
