For the last three years, Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) has extended the entire community an invitation to visit campus and experience the variety of resources PLNU has to offer as part of its annual President’s Community Day. The school promises this year’s to be the biggest and best version yet.
Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is your chance to see it all for yourself. The public is invited to come enjoy a day of food, fun and festivities on the school’s ocean-side campus.
Activities include lunch and concert in the Greek Amphitheater; inflatable bounce houses; puppet shows and storytelling; athletic clinics for children “” including golf, basketball, baseball and soccer games; three stages of musical performances featuring the VIP gospel choir, Point Loma Strings Project and other community music groups; Point Loma Artists painting on-campus scenes in real-time; a demonstration by PLNU’s nationally ranked debate team; prize giveaways from sponsors; and a Red Cross blood donation center set up all day.
In addition, history buffs will love to hear presentations on the Point Loma area and Madame Katherine Tingley, one of the leaders of the Theosophical movement in the United States. She resided in what is now Cabrillo Hall, the school’s communications building.
According to Joe Watkins, vice president of community development, the purpose of Community Day is to “help raise the awareness of how the university contributes to the fabric of the community in a positive way.”
Students and staff of the school will be available to answer questions. Other tours will be offered throughout the day, including an early-morning birdwalk, a historic garden tour and a general campus tour.
Food is a key part of the event, as lunch will be served in the Greek Amphitheater, along with samplings from restaurants in the Bartell Hotels Group. A concert will also be held at lunchtime.
Dozens of sponsor booths will also be on hand to offer information and answer questions from community members. Several local and state politicians, including County Supervisor Greg Cox, will be on hand to greet constituents.
