PLHS?celebrates 92nd Homecoming: Themed floats, music genres and more

Students and staff at Point Loma High celebrated the school’s 92nd Homecoming recently with six days of fun and events that added fun and merriment to the rigors of everyday classes and assignments.
Each class has been working for weeks after school hours and on weekends on its float for the halftime parade during the Homecoming football game that is part of the week’s most-anticipated event.  The theme for this year’s parade was “music genres,” with the freshman class choosing rock, the sophomores country, the juniors rap and seniors selected “2000 throwbacks.”
Selected as members of the Homecoming Court this year were freshmen Kaitlyn Vedder and Donvan Davalos, sophomores Talia Baxter and a young man who was removed and not allowed to participate. Juniors were Paige Teague and Tim Schuhmann.
A change this year, according to ASB Advisor Amy Denney, was the election of three seniors to the court with the announcement of the King and Queen made during the Friday football game.
Seniors Taylor Ybarra, Jasmine Anderson Nick Fithen and Travis Choy were members of the court while Kyle Johnson and Avin Niknafs were named King and Queen.
The week began with “Military Monday,” a day for students and staff to salute the nation’s men and women in uniform.
Tuesday was designated as “Teacher Twin Tuesday,” with students coming to school dressed as their favorite teacher. Some very creative costumes were reported.
Next up was Meme Wednesday.
Throwback Thursday followed with students dressing in outfits dating back to ancient times before their birth such as the 1980’s and 90’s.
Finally, on Friday, the students and staff honored Breast Cancer Awareness Week with a “PINK OUT!” of their own. That night, all players wore pink as part of their football uniforms as well.
The Friday night football game was a huge success as the Fighting Pointers bounced back from a bitter defeat by St. Augustine to dominate Mira Mesa by a 35-6 score. Named as King and Queen were Kyle Johnson and Avin Niknafs. And, as seems to be tradition, the float by the senior class was judged first place.
The week’s festivities came to a close on Oct. 15 when 950 students packed a sold-out Pointer gym for the annual Homecoming dance.
