The Point Loma High School girls soccer team was eliminated from CIF playoff action Friday after narrowly being defeated 1-0 by Westview High School on the road.
The Pointers girls suffered the loss in the Division II quarterfinals.
Despite posting an overall record of 8-11-2 this season, the Pointers had a winning league record at 6-4-2. PLHS defeated the Hilltop Lancers the previous week in the first round of CIF playoffs.
Westview now moves on to face Valhalla in the semifinal round. San Pascual (14-3-4, 11-0-4) will face West Hills (13-7-1, 7-1) in the other semifinal game in Division II. San Pascual defeated Mission Hills 3-2 last week while West Hills outlasted Oceanside 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Despite the disappointing overall regular season record, Point Loma advanced farther this season than in 2007 when they were eliminated by Eastlake 2-1 in the first round.
The Pointers’ overall record was better in 2007 (14-8), although they recorded the same number of league losses and wins last season.
PLHS had its inconsistencies this year against the league. The Pointers were 4-1-1 at home but 2-3-1 on the road. The Pointers outscored league opponents 16-4 at home but managed only five goals on the road against league rivals.
Sophomore midfielder/forward Shelly Murphy was the leading scorer for the Pointers this season with 13 goals and 9 assists. Junior midfielder Bianca Perez finished second in scoring with 9 goals and 5 assists.
The Division II finals will be at Helix High School on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m.
