All eyes were on La Jolla Cove this past weekend. In addition to thousands of car aficionados flocking to the La Jolla Motor Car Classic at Ellen Browning Scripps Park on April 3, the nearby Children’s Pool saw a larger-than-usual crowd of both beach-goers and activists. Seal-protection advocates held a rally Sunday afternoon, displaying signage throughout the day and voicing their support for making beach access a pinniped-only right. Meanwhile, dozens of pro-access proponents settled on the “seal side” of the no access rope — with kids playing in the shallow waters, divers entering the reef and many others settling in the sand, soaking up the sun during its rare appearances through the clouds. At least four police officers kept watch over occasional heated debates that broke out between those for and against human beach access, while seals relaxed on the rocks or in the sand.
