Peters unveils #FixCongressNow plan to curb government waste

Democrat Congressman Scott Peters, a La Jolla resident whose 52nd Congressional District includes La Jolla, on Feb. 26 held an interactive telephone town hall to announce his #FixCongressNow plan, designed to reduce government waste.
“San Diegans,” Peters said, “are rightfully frustrated with a Congress that is a gridlocked and an inflexible federal bureaucracy; government has to rebuild the trust it has lost with the American people through aggressive reforms and innovative problem solving. My plan will make a number of reforms to fix Congress and get government working for the people again. The effort will also require a cultural shift in government away from continued bureaucratic growth and toward efficient customer service that better serves the taxpayer.”
Peters’ plan includes six categories, each with policy proposals to be introduced or co-sponsored in the coming months:
• Make Congress Work, instituting five-day congressional work weeks and enforcing a No Budget, No Pay program; • Improve Our Elections, requiring SuperPACs to disclose donations over $500 and making vote by mail nationwide; • Remove Inefficiency and Government Waste, making a concerted effort to consolidate rather than duplicate programs; • Ensure Ethical Standards, requiring annual ethics and sexual harassment training and banning lobbyists from the House floor; • Increase Transparency and Openness, increasing public disclosure of Congressional trips and requiring vendors to disclose when Congress can provide services for free; and • Make Government Green, cutting down on paper waste and increasing energy efficiency and renewal energy programs in federal buildings.
