The lot next to Pernicano’s – in the heart of Hillcrest on Sixth Avenue between Robinson and University avenues – opened for public parking June 9. Benjamin Nicholls, executive director of the Hillcrest Business Association, said credit for the additional parking goes to District 3 Councilmember Todd Gloria. “Thanks to the councilmember, Hillcrest has gotten over 37 new parking spaces in a lot we never thought we’d get,” he said. Cost for parking in the lot ranges from $2 for one hour to $7 for nine hours. Although the Pernicano family did sign with Parking Company of America to manage the lot, there are no plans to sell or open the adjacent restaurant, which has been closed for more than 25 years.
