Meeting your neighbor over a white picket fence – or at a bar on Garnet Avenue – may never happen, but neighbors will talk shop over glasses of locally grown wine at a Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) fundraiser on June 14. The town council is hosting its eighth Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction on June 14 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Lotsa Pasta restaurant at 1762 Garnet Ave. “It’s a fantastic way to come out and meet your neighbors and other community members in a social atmosphere for a very affordable evening,” said past president Ruby Houck. The evening features a silent auction and raffle prizes, but its main purpose is to raise money for youth programs sponsored by the town council. While town council members are known for pounding the streets to collect trash, the fundraiser will benefit programs with a little more spark. In 2006, the wine tasting – PBTC’s largest fundraiser – brought in $2,000 to sponsor the Halloween Carnival at the Pacific Beach Recreation Center that the city had cut from its budget. Another year, the PBTC used its silent auction money to purchase a giant raft for the junior lifeguard program’s finale when students jump off the OB pier. “It’s too much of a swim for the younger ones,” Houck said. “So we bought them a giant blow-up raft so kids can swim half way off the pier, rest and then swim the rest of the way in.” Houck said the PBTC aims to sell 100 tickets to garner $3,000. As for the wine tasting, representatives from Eagles Nest Winery, San Pasqual Vineyard and Rock Canyon Vineyard will discuss their wine. The silent auction will feature a one-night stay at a hotel with an ocean view, tickets for four at SeaWorld, restaurant certificates, spa treatments and the Pacific Beach ubiquitous beach cruiser. Tickets cost $30 per person and are available at the PBTC office, 1706 Garnet Ave. or at Lotsa Pasta. Pasta.portion of the freeway to quicken the flow of trade between America and Mexico. The project is estimated to create 1,400 jobs and to be completed by June 2012, according to www.sandiego.gov/stimulus.
