For one Pacific Beach resident, skateboarding is more than a hobby, it’s a passion. And he’s not too bad — for a guy who has four legs. That’s right, one of the baddest skaters in town is a bulldog. “As young as I can remember he was attracted to skateboards,” said Floyd’s companion, Dave Dressman. “At first, he would just freak out and attack them, and eventually the aggression turned into love and now he wants to ride them.” Meet Floyd, the skateboarding bulldog. He can be seen on YouTube and around Pacific Beach, coasting on his skateboard with the ocean breeze blowing through his — er, fur. “I simply put it in front of him and gauged his reaction and he was very enthusiastic about it. I just really encouraged it and tried to teach him not so much to bite the wheels, but more to enjoy riding it,” Dressman said. “It literally is the thing he loves the most in the entire world.” On a daily basis, four-year-old Floyd seems to look forward to nothing more than getting on his custom longboard and cruising along the sidewalk. “He seriously waits all day for the 25 to 45 minutes he gets to spend on the board each day,” Dressman said. “I can barely get him to go for a walk around the block, but you pull the skateboard out and he’s sprinting down the street.” While Dressman has to push Floyd uphill, Floyd needs no assistance getting started on flat terrain. All it takes is a couple of quick pedals and he’s gone. “If he’s going downhill, he’s good on his own — he will give a couple pedals and take off,” Dressman said. Once on the board, Floyd illustrates his most impressive skill — his steering. Floyd avoids falling off the board with subtle leans here and there, most barely noticeable to the eye. “He can completely steer the thing himself,” Dressman said. “I’ll take him down on the PB boardwalk or the bay and he can avoid people and take turns. “He’s learned from being on the sidewalk so much. Being on such a narrow pathway has honed his leaning and turning skills.” Floyd skates every day and Dressman, who lives on Beryl Street, said he draws crowds when he takes the bulldog down to the beach. The pup is definitely a fan favorite. “He makes a ton of people smile,” Dressman said. “I get huge crowds with him down at the boardwalk. Cameras are popping out instantaneously upon people seeing him.” So the next time a four-legged friend rolls by on the sidewalk, don’t be alarmed. It’s probably just Floyd.
