Girl Scouts San Diego Board Chairwoman Debbie Rider and Junior Troop 3811 were among nearly 7,000 participants who filled Balboa Park during the annual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” event in Partnership with Girl Scouts.
March 1 was a day to honor the memory of Chelsea King, a former Girl Scout who was tragically murdered. Following two days of stormy weather, the skies cleared and the sun came out just in time for the start of the 5K competitive race and 1-mile shortcut. Rain showers later in the morning — during a surprise flash mob performance to a lively reggae tune — simply added to the upbeat mood. The event also included a community festival with a live band, face painting and other family-friendly attractions, like STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities led by teen Girl Scouts.
This is the first time Girl Scouts have co-hosted the run/walk and the fourth year San Diegans have gathered to remember Chelsea, whose life was cut short at the age of 17 while out jogging. She was an avid runner and community volunteer who loved Balboa Park. Proceeds from the 2014 event will benefit Chelsea’s Light Foundation’s Sunflower Scholarship Fund, educate the public about Chelsea’s Law and support Girl Scouting.
