PACIFIC BEACH — The Park and Recreation board will meet today, Aug. 19, to discuss whether to amend the San Diego Municipal Code (SDMC) 56.54 and place a 24-hour alcohol ban at Kate O. Sessions Park in Pacific Beach instead of its current 12-hour ban. In 2007, police received 96 calls for service for the park, according to a document from the Park and Recreation board. In 2009, police received 281 total calls; and year-to-date for 2010, police have received 171 calls regarding Kate O. Sessions Park. Park and Recreation is considering amending the SDMC by removing the park from the 12-hour ban under 56.54B and including it in 56.54A, which dictates a 24-hour ban. This appendix dictates the beach alcohol ban as well. The board is also considering several compromises to the 24-hour ban, which include a possible 24-hour alcohol ban only on the weekends, a keg ban and a possible16-hour alcohol ban at the park. The public meeting will be held at 2 p.m. in the City Administration Building Committee Room, 12th Floor, 202 C St. The board will hear public comment on the topic.
