Later this month, Paradise Point Resort and Spa will have the look inside to match its picturesque views. The resort that has been on Vacation Isle for four decades is renovating its meeting spaces and guest rooms. “The original structure has been around since 1962 and it has a great footprint on the water,” said resort general manager Geoff Young. “It was time to reinvent the space. There are a lot of new hotels and resorts in San Diego and there came a point in time when it was time to renovate.” One of two recent projects at the resort was a two-year, $10 million endeavor to upgrade and update its existing conference space. That project expanded the space to more than 35,000 square feet and was completed last month. “What we have that’s so unique is waterfront meeting space,” Young said. “Half of our meeting space overlooks the bay and we wanted to capitalize on it and open up the space to the views.” According to Young, the conference space renovations turned 25 percent of interior kitchen space at Paradise Point into meeting space. The 29 meeting and banquet rooms are now connected with interior hallways and each features an interior foyer. Local architect Steve Rossi handled the plans for the renovation. Seattle-based designer Andrea Dawson did the design, which Young calls “South Beach Polynesian meets contemporary meets San Diego.” By the middle of March, the second part of Paradise Point’s renovations will be complete — $9 million in upgrades to its 462 rooms. The bungalow-style cottages now feature a new South Pacific design, bigger windows, flat screen TVs and ceramic plank flooring. Of course, the 44-acre resort didn’t need to upgrade its best feature, the fact that it is surrounded by nearly a mile of sandy beach. Young said 25 percent of Paradise Point’s guest rooms are on the water. “We’re on an island — and there’s no other island in Southern California where you have a full-service resort and the kids can run around and everybody feels safe,” Young said. “A lot of people don’t realize that if the bridges weren’t here, you wouldn’t come onto the island.” Paradise Point Resort and Spa is located at 1404 Vacation Road.
