Padres send Rodney to Miami, acquire pitching prospect

The San Diego Padres June 30 announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack from the Miami Marlins in exchange for right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodney. Executive vice president/general manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Paddack, 20, has gone 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA (3 ER, 28.1 IP), 48 strikeouts against two walks and a .098 (9-for-92) opponents batting average in six starts this season, all for Single-A Greensboro. The right-hander has worked 5.0 innings of no-hit baseball in each of his last three starts, striking out 28 over 15.0 innings and walking just one batter in that stretch.
He originally signed with the Marlins as an eighth-round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Cedar Park (Texas) High School. Over parts of two professional seasons (2015-16) in the Marlins organization he has gone 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA (14 ER, 73.2 IP), 87 strikeouts against nine walks and a .176 opponents batting average in 17 games, 13 starts.
Rodney, 39, has gone 0-1 with 17 saves in 17 chances, a 0.31 ERA (1 ER, 28.2 IP) and 33 strikeouts against 12 walks, holding opponents to a .137 (13-for-95) opponents average. The right-hander was signed by the Padres as a free agent this past offseason in February 2016. Over parts of 14 Major League seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2002-03, 2005-09), Los Angeles Angels (2010-11), Tampa Bay Rays (2012-13), Seattle Mariners (2014-15), Chicago Cubs (2015) and Padres (2016), he has gone 37-56 with 253 saves in 310 chances, a 3.58 ERA (290 ER, 729.0 IP) and 718 strikeouts against 353 walks in 728 total games, all relief appearances.
