Ben McCue created a ‘surfboard’ out of discarded trash found in the Tijuana River estuary, which he used to paddle around the OB Fishing Pier Sunday, Sept. 17 during the Surfrider Foundation’s 15th annual Paddle for Clean Water.
The contraption proved a winner, as it earned McCue the ‘Most Creative Paddlecraft’ award and a custom-made surfboard. More than 800 participants circumnavigated the West Coast’s longest pier to raise awareness about water pollution.
In addition to promoting clean oceans, the event highlighted efforts to save Trestles, a world-famous North County surfing spot that is threatened by a proposed toll road to connect Interstate 5 and inland Orange County.
