Pacific Beach events: June 23 — July 10

SATURDAY, June 25 San Diego Junior Lifeguard Foundation families, friends and supporters are preparing to host the second annual Start of Summer (SOS) event, in which participants are invited to a dinner gala benefiting San Diego aquatic safety programs like Bridge the Beach and Learn to swim. The buffet-style event, which takes place Saturday, June 25 at the Mission Bay Yacht Club, features live music and a silent auction. The event happens at 1215 El Carmel Place and tickets are $25 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at www.sdjbfoundation.org. SUNDAY, June 26 The Pacific Beach Town Council will host its 10th annual wine-tasting and silent auction event on Sunday, June 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. The proceeds from the event, which also marks the Town Council’s 60th anniversary, will benefit area schools like Kate Sessions Elementary, Pacific Beach Elementary, and Mission Bay High schools. Town Council board director Susan Lowary, who serves as the fundraising committee’s co-chair with Cathie Jolley — also a director — said they expect 150 people at the event as the Town Council strives to reach a minimum goal of $15,000. For a downloadable flyer, as well as more information, call (858) 483-6666, or visit www.pbtowncouncil.org. SUNDAY, July 10 The Pacific Beach American Legion Auxiliary is asking residents to “Sock it to me!” The campaign is designed to collect new socks for men and women of all ages (including babies) for Stand Down 2011. Neighbors are encouraged to drop off new socks on Sunday, July 10 at the Veterans of Foreign Warms Hall, located at 853 Turquoise St. Doors typically open around 11:30 a.m. Stand Down is a three-day event that assists hundreds of San Diego Veterans and their families with food, clothing, hot showers, a variety of medical and legal services and other needs. In 2010, the auxiliary contributed 364 pairs of new socks, thanks to the generosity of the community. For more information about the auxiliary, call (858) 488-3631. SUNDAY, July 10 The Mission Bay Deli will host the Robin Henkel Band with blues hard blower Billy Watson on Sunday, July 24 from 2 to 6 p.m. The free event, which is open to all ages, takes place at 1548 Quivira Way. For more information, call (619) 223-5056.
