The Ocean Beach Pier is fully open after months of partial closure for emergency repairs. On the morning of July 8, crews removed fencing from the western end of the pier opening up the “T” section that extends out to the north and south. Repairs began in December 2021 to fix damage caused by storm conditions. Crews completed work on several columns, known as piles, vertically supporting the structure.

“The emergency repairs consisted of fixing two piles, railings, and other deck improvements impacted by past storms,” said Tyler Becker, City spokesperson. “These repairs will provide a safe and functional pier for the public, but do not address the long-term plans for the pier.

“Unfortunately, after 56 years of exposure to a harsh marine environment and climate change increasing the frequency of storm events and rising sea levels, the pier has reached the end of its useful life,” said Becker. “As a result, the City has initiated a capital project to replace the pier. This capital project to address the pier’s long-term needs is currently in the preliminary engineering phase, an early step in a long process.”

OB Pier is the second-longest on the West Coast and attracts more than 500,000 visitors annually.
