Occupy Wall Street hits San Diego

By Jarett Boskovich | SDUN Reporter and Photographer

Occupy San Diego, a movement originating from the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City, came to San Diego on Oct. 7, and protesters are vowing to continue indefinitely.

Approximately 1,500 protesters peacefully gathered and marched towards the Civic Center Plaza in downtown to support and draw attention to the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations.

With participants referring to themselves as “one of the 99 percent,” the occupation movement targets the one percent of the people in the United States protesters claim “own and control the wealth.”

The Occupy group chose to include San Diego because it is a financial and military hub. In addition to protesting the one percent, demonstrators are also protesting the financial support of wars in which the United States participates. Protesters say they do support the troops, explaining they too are part of the 99 percent.

Golden Hill resident Allen de la Rosa said, “It’s a joy to see common concerns voiced and heard from the power of the people. All ages and backgrounds have gathered, and regardless of a clear agenda, it is certain we all share the same vision: to restore our country in which our forefathers believed in and fought for.”

As days pass, the movement gains in strength and in number. Now, 650 cities around the world have coordinated and designated Oct. 15 as a day for global protest.
