OB watercolor artists finds muse on the peninsula

?Judy Odell, acclaimed local artist, will share various works of original acrylic and watercolor paintings, prints and giclèes (a print on either paper or canvas, individually signed and numbered by Odell), at her marine-themed solo showing at Southwestern Yacht Club, 2702 Qualtrough St.
Before moving to Ocean Beach six years ago, Odell was a professional artist in the Pacific Northwest, and her paintings found their way into many private and corporate collections.
“I am retired, but as far as I’m concerned artists never retire, and I’m really just getting going,” Odell said.
Working primarily in acrylics and watercolors, Odell focuses much of her work on her favorite subjects: the beach and flowers.
“My first love is the beach and the water and the mountains, the birds and floras,” she said, which is one of the reasons why Odell loves living in Ocean Beach.
She explained that inspiration often comes to her from walking the neighborhood.
“We walk the cliffs a lot and I take a lot of photographs and then I paint that scene,” she explained. “I wouldn’t want to live anyplace else in California.”

Painting mostly in the Impressionist style, Odell said she is often inspired by the work of John Singer Sargent, who was a successful portrait painter as well as a gifted landscape painter and watercolorist during the early 1900s.
Odell is a member of the San Diego Watercolor Society and the Point Loma Artists Association. Her painting, “Still Life with Roses,” may be viewed at the Bank of America, 1275 Rosecrans St., as part of the Point Loma Artists Association show through Jan. 5.
The solo show at the Southwestern Yacht Club will continue through Friday, Dec. 1.
