Oakmont senior living in Pacific Beach plans to open in summer

Oakmont, a Pacific Beach luxury assisted living and memory care community now under construction opening in late spring/early summer, has debuted its marketing information center and is now accepting reservations, as well as holding an open house onsite Saturday, March 18.
Just three blocks from the beach, the three-floor seniors facility at 955 Grand Ave. will be a 72,266-square-foot community featuring 74 total residences including assisted-living and memory-care apartment homes. Oakmont will inhabit the corner of Cass Street and Grand Avenue where the coffeehouse Javinican-The Purple Cafe at 4388 Cass St. stood for many years.
Floor plans at Oakmont include studio, one- and two-bedroom options ranging from 400 to 966 square feet, all with 10-foot-high ceilings and spacious bathrooms.
“Whether you enjoy sailing on Mission Bay, or fishing off Crystal Pier, Oakmont of Pacific Beach is a community that fulfills the dream of an endless summer,” said Laurie Tomasello, executive director of Oakmont of Pacific Beach. “We are excited to provide seniors and their families the opportunity to experience exceptional senior living in this beautiful coastal community.” Oakmont’s amenity package for all residents will include:
• Gourmet meals served in a restaurant-style dining room;
• On and off-site recreational and social activities;
• A library, movie theater with plush seating, full-size fitness center with exercise classes and activity rooms with scheduled social events, games, arts and crafts;
• An onsite salon and day spa, private dining room, flower and vegetable garden, walking paths and a pet park;
• Secured underground parking, chauffeured transportation and concierge services. Oakmont’s marketing director, Kathleen McCarthy, said Oakmont will deliver three different levels of care: completely unassisted independent living, assisted living for the less capable and memory care, on the second floor, for residents with more acute assistance needs.
“For the majority of residents who are able, they’ll be able to go out and enjoy the area,” McCarthy said adding, for those who can’t fend for themselves, “We’ll have staff at the community 24 hours a day, and a complete security-camera system throughout the facility. We’ll also have a concierge at the front-door area. We’re in pretty good shape as far as security is concerned.”
McCarthy discussed the new facility’s modern amenities.
“Oakmont has some great technology,” she said. “We put in some sensors in all the memory-care apartments. Any time someone’s in bed and moves around, a caregiver will have their pager go off letting them know. This will make it safer, allowing them to prevent someone from possibly falling. We’ll also have hydration stations set up within the community itself, making sure residents, who may not be able to communicate, stay hydrated, which is important.”
In August 2014, Pacific Beach Planning Group voted 14-4-1 in favor Oakmont. However, community planners expressed two main concerns about the project: the appropriateness of a senior facility so near traffic and the beach, and displacement of the popular Purple Cafe.
Developers responded by including a new coffee shop in design plans for the new seniors facility.
“They have a retail space, most likely a coffee shop, on the outside of the site for the community,” confirmed McCarthy.
PBPG board member Eve Anderson said during Oakmont’s review three years ago that she felt, “this one is too close to the beach. … and near bars that are open until 2 a.m.” Planner Imelda McClendon countered,”We’re trying to make Pacific Beach more family oriented, and to me this is a great project to start that process.”
Oakmont of Pacific Beach is scheduled to open for resident move-in by late spring or early summer 2017. For more information, call 858-373-9300, 858-952-1353 or email [email protected] or visit www.OakmontOfPacificBeach.com.
