AFTER WATCHING FORMER MISS PB ANNA CAWTHON CHAMBERLAIN in the Del Mar Race Track commercials all summer, I gave her a call to see what the deal was. We had brunch at the Green Flash, and she told me she wasn’t the blond in the commercials. Oh. I mentioned to the waitress that Anna and I had met in front of Green Flash in 1981, when Anna was renting boogie boards for Armando and it was the original World Famous and there was no patio. IF GOOD TIME CHARLIE’S OWNER MIKE CRAWFORD hadn’t been at the game in Boulder, Colo., he could have watched his son Cody catch a couple of nice passes on the new flat-screen televisions newly installed at the restaurant. All I saw when I was there was — ME. Almost lost my dinner when I looked up to see Jack Gates interviewing me on Channel 4 before the Padre game. Artistic Licenses: Set ’em up!!! “BEER ME” was on an Alaska plate parked in front of PB Bar and Grill on Garnet. “KRWN RYL” can be found outside the Open Bar on Mission and Thomas on Sunday mornings. 25 Years Ago: Democrats were cheered by upsets in the primary election held in the city on Sept. 19, 1983. Celia Ballesteros upset appointed city council incumbent Uvaldo Martinez. City schools trustee Bob Filner out-pointed 3rd district incumbent Gloria McColl but would still face a November election. William Jones moved into a runoff against football player Mike Garrett, and Mike Gotch would face Eleu Tabares in the 6th district. 50 Years Ago: One hundred Mission Bay High School students wore gas masks to school to protest the odor that had drifted over the campus for several days. Students said they had purchased the masks at military surplus stores for prices ranging from 25 cents to $1. The city said the aroma came from its new oxidation basin just south of the fence on the campus boundary. The basin handled sewage being dumped into Mission Bay. 75 Years Ago: Residents of Ingraham Street objected to a proposal to change its name to State Park Drive. This must have had something to do with plans to declare Mission Bay a state park, because Midway Drive was also going to be part of the name change. Councilman Albert Bennett promised to investigate. 100 Years Ago: In order to provide additional transportation for the “many visitors in San Diego,” two motorcars were added by the Los Angeles and San Diego Beach Railway. Visitors who hoped to ride one of the self-propelled diesel cars to Los Angeles would discover that they traveled only as far as Prospect and Fay La Jolla before they turned around and headed back to San Diego.
