North Park Toyland Parade kicks off the holiday season

By Ashley Mackin | SDUN Editor North Park Toyland Parade kicks off the holiday season

The North Park community welcomes friends and family for the North Park Toyland Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3. Starting at 11 a.m., Santa Claus will be riding atop his red sleigh in the parade, along with marching bands, dance groups, vintage cars, beauty queens and city officials. The parade starts at Utah Street, runs along University Avenue and ends at Iowa Street.

Angela Lansberg, executive director of North Park Main Street, said, “The Toyland Parade is a unique North Park event that brings the entire San Diego community together,” adding, “The combination of 48 years of historical significance coupled with the recent revitalization of the business district gives the parade-goers the opportunity to visit North Park, enjoy the parade and explore our restaurants, bars and unique shops.”

Judy Elliot, executive director of the North Park Business Association, said, “As a resident and as executive director of North Park Business Association, we are always happy to see activities in the area. I have attended the parade in past years, and I think it’s a great celebration. It’s just wonderful. It’s great for kids, it’s a nice thing to do… and it’s great for all businesses.”

Lansberg explained that to encourage as many attendants as possible, the 400-space parking structure is free for the day.

Through the day, Toys for Tots will have drop-off locations for depositing unopened toys in North Park. The following businesses will have donation bins: Ascent Real Estate, Bar Pink, Gorgeous Salon, North Park Theatre, North Park Main Street, The Mission Restaurant, Urban Solace and Sea Rocket Bistro.

Lansberg said the event is great for both children and adults. “Children will enjoy seeing the animals, dancers in costume and, of course, Santa Claus,” she said, adding that, for adults, “The parade also offers vintage cars, floats and music. This is an event that celebrates the holiday season and provides an opportunity to enjoy the many things that North Park has to offer your family.”
