Gretchen Newsom issued the following statement on her decision to withdraw from the mayor’s race:
“I have decided that I will not run for mayor. My husband and I have recently decided to divorce on an amicable basis and, therefore, I need to focus on our son. I appreciate everyone’s respect of our privacy.
“I want to thank my friends, neighbors, and community for the outpouring of support I have received. I am honored by and grateful for your enthusiasm to stand with me. Our fight for meaningful investments in working families and our communities must continue. I encourage everyone to support raising the minimum wage and other ballot measures and candidates that lift up working families.”  
Newsom is a community leader and advocate of working families. She is the current president of the Ocean Beach Town Council and the political director for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 569.
