Community planning group holds elections
On Nov. 5 and 6, downtown residents and business owners will vote to elect 17 new members to the 18-seat CCAC (Centre City Advisory Committee), Downtown’s community planning group.
The election will kick off on Monday, Nov. 5 at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza, with an opportunity to meet the candidates and vote from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A variety of refreshments from local restaurants will be provided.
CCAC is the state-mandated, city-chartered, community planning group for Downtown San Diego.
It reviews proposed projects and plans, including those for public amenities such as parks, transportation and parking, affordable housing, relocation and other social matters.
The CCAC advises the CCDC board of directors, the City Council, Redevelopment Agency and Planning Commission. Its 28 members are elected for two-year terms.
Votes may be cast on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at three downtown locations: Downtown Information Center, 225 Broadway at the NBC building ground floor opposite Macy’s from noon to 6:30 p.m.; Art Academy of San Diego, 840 G St. at Ninth Avenue from noon to 6:30 p.m.; and Studio M Hair Salon, 1399 Ninth Ave. at Ash Street from noon to 6:30 p.m.
Voter registration forms can be downloaded at www.ccdc.com /ccac or picked up at the Downtown Information Center, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Businesses provide
food to fire victims
Chef Brian Malarky, general manager Mike Mitchell and the staff of The Oceanaire Seafood Room donated both food and manpower to feed 400 evacuees at Mira Mesa High School on Oct. 23. The Oceanaire Seafood Room pulled together resources needed with the help of donations from Hamilton Meats.
Evacuees were excited to receive the meal, and their spirits were also lifted by the surprise appearance of Top Chef 3 Miami finalist, Malarky.
The Palm Restaurant’s general manager Carl Essert, along with executive chef Miguel Martinez and his staff, put together sandwiches and dropped them off at Gillespie Field, base camp for firefighters of the Harris Fire.
Picnic People catering fed thousands of lunches and dinners to firefighters in Scripps Ranch.
Big production lines were put in place in their kitchen to assemble, and then crews drove to established sites for the “feedings.”
Hillcrest named “Great Neighborhood” by APA
Hillcrest has been designated one of 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2007 through the American Planning Association’s (APA) Great Places in America program. The APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value. The APA selected Hillcrest as one of its 10 Great Neighborhoods in America because of its legacy of activism and trendsetting.
