Arts and crafts fair springs on the horizon Pacific Beach Women’s Club will host a “spring fling” featuring arts and crafts just in time for Mother’s Day on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the clubhouse on 1721 Hornblend St. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the club’s scholarships given to two Mission Bay High students for $1,000 each. The group also plans to spruce up the clubhouse, which turns 100 years old in 2010. Surveillance cameras will watch over bay Mission Bay is expected to receive 13 to 16 surveillance cameras to monitor launch ramps and water areas to protect against homeland security threats, reported Sgt. John Everhart for Lifeguard Services to the Mission Bay Park Committee on April 7. The Department of Homeland Security is funding the cameras. Everhart also reported that due to budget cuts, Lifeguard Services lost two lifeguards for the upcoming summer season. Recycle old boards into school benches Pacific Beach 8th grader Rusty Mendoza is collecting old and damaged surfboards, snowboards and skateboards to recycle into cement benches for the school’s garden. Drop off old boards on Saturday, April 18, 9-11 a.m. at PB Middle, 4676 Ingraham St. Mendoza is working with Rerip.com to recycle old boards to prevent toxic chemicals polluting the environment, as part of his International Baccalaureate service requirement. Woman reports assault in Crown Point A woman fought off an attacker after he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her on Saturday, March 28 at approximately 10:30 p.m. Police believe the assault occurred in the general area of Crown Point in Pacific Beach. Police said the woman called and reported the incident from a coffee shop in Crown Point the following morning. The male attacker, wearing dark clothing, reportedly came up from behind the woman, grabbed her and hit her on the head with an object before assaulting her, said Mònica Muñoz, spokeswoman for the San Diego Police Department. Police said the woman fought him off. The incident is currently under investigation, according to San Diego Police Lt. Rick O’Hanlon. Town Hall meeting to discuss school cuts Anyone who cares about the schools is invited to meet with SDUSD board member John de Beck to discuss recent district budget cuts at a meeting on Monday, April 27. “I strongly encourage you to attend this local opportunity and let board members know our opposition to a part-time principal,” said Friends of Pacific Beach Elementary President Dawna Deatrick. Board trustees voted to end busing to magnet schools and plan to consolidate one principal for every two schools that have fewer than 400 students. The April 27 meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Bird Rock Elementary School, 5371 La Jolla Hermosa Ave.
