Street re-striping set for July 7 and 8 District 1 Councilwoman Sherri Lightner’s office announced that the sewer and water repairs on Village streets are scheduled to conclude at the end of June, with the final step of re-striping the streets to occur Wednesday, July 7 and Thursday, July 8 from 5 a.m. to noon each day. The contractor is finishing asphalt patches and will apply a slurry seal — a thin asphalt overlay — from June 28 to July 1. The re-striping cannot be applied until at least a week after the slurry seal is completed, Lightner’s office explained in an e-mail, and officials wanted to avoid the project during the July 4 holiday weekend. Playhouse receives $900,000 grant The La Jolla Playhouse’s Theatre and Arts Foundation of San Diego County has been awarded a $900,000 grant by the James Irvine Foundation to create events outside the theater through its new Theatre Without Walls program. Becky Biegelsen, public relations director for the Playhouse, said in an e-mail that the grant enables the program to provide “a safe harbor for unsafe art … [and] offer theatrical experiences that venture beyond the physical confines of its facilities.” The Playhouse will also experiment with new mediums for delivering content, such as computers, cell phones, video and other technologies, Biegelsen added. The San Francisco-based James Irvine Foundation provides $8.6 million in grants to 15 organizations throughout California to fund projects in arts, education, civic involvement, youth and democracy. J*Company celebrates awards The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center’s J*Company Youth Theater received National Youth Theatre and Old Globe Theatre nominations and awards for its 2009-2010 season, which included productions of “South Pacific,” “The King and I,” “The Sound of Music” and “Cinderella.” Joey Landwehr, J*Company’s artistic director who produced all four shows of the season, said he was “amazed” that in the last five years, the group “has not presented one production that has not been honored in some way.” Demonstration planned against offshore drilling With global thoughts on the recent BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, local residents are being asked to join hands on the beach Saturday as a statement against offshore drilling. The demonstration, dubbed Hands Across the Sand, will be held at La Jolla Shores on June 26. The event comes less than two months after the BP oil-rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that has resulted in one of the largest oil spills in history. In addition to holding hands, event participants will draw physical and metaphorical lines in the sand as an anti-drilling demonstration. The La Jolla Shores demonstration will be held near the lifeguard station at 11:30 a.m. On Saturday, people in 46 states and 16 countries will participate in the now-global event.
