Volunteers clean beach at Children’s Pool Seventeen people arrived at the Children’s Pool, Casa Beach and Wipeout at 7 a.m. on Saturday to remove feces, cigarette butts, glass and other debris from the sand. By noon, the group filled 60 bags with trash and swept the stairs leading to the Children’s Pool. The event was sponsored by I Love A Clean San Diego’s Adopt a Beach program with the San Diego Council of Divers and the Friends of the Children’s Pool. Michele Addington, a La Jolla Community Planning Association board member who participated in the event, said she was thrilled with the outcome. “A very young girl came up to me and thanked us for cleaning the beach,” Addington said. “The cleanup was a huge success.” The groups plan to hold another cleanup in August. Coldwell Banker sponsors backpack donation event Children in need across San Diego will enter the new school year with backpacks and other supplies, thanks to a donation drive sponsored by sales associates at the La Jolla Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. The drive lasts now through Aug. 10, and donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker La Jolla office at 930 Prospect St. A special music event will take place at Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive, on Aug. 1 from 3 to 7 p.m., where donations will also be accepted. For more information, call (858) 353-0406. Neurosciences Institute receives grant Dr. Stephen Cowen, associate fellow in experimental neurobiology at the Neurosciences Institute, has been awarded $75,000 by the Blasker-Rose-Mia Fund at The San Diego Foundation for his research of the neurological basis for cost-benefit decision-making processes in the brain. The Neurosciences Institute, founded in 1988, is a nonprofit scientific organization in La Jolla dedicated to brain research. UCSD adopts strong fair trade policy In a commitment to promote fair trade certified products, support sustainable business practices and humane working conditions, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has signed a policy requiring all future food and vendor contracts on campus to sell 100 percent fair trade coffee, tea and sugar. The campaign was conceived by One Earth One Justice, a UCSD student organization dedicated to environmental and social justice. Other groups later became involved. Seany Foundationwins grant via Facebook The Seany Foundation, a La Jolla charity that funds research and support for pediatric cancer, received $20,000 after 2.5 million Facebook users ranked it in the top 200 in the Chase Community Giving campaign. The summer giving program awarded similar grants to 200 organizations in 34 states. In other news: • A steering committee will meet Thursday, July 29, 4 p.m. at 1150 Silverado to discuss potential options for a new La Jolla Business Improvement District. • Kent Thomas Keigwin has been arrested on suspicion of the June 8 murder of La Jolla resident John G. Watson, whose body was discovered inside his Camino Del Oro apartment. The medical examiner determined that the cause of death was strangulation by suffocation. Physical evidence at the scene pointed to Keigwin as a suspect. Keigwin is also charged with a fraud scheme in which Watson was a victim. • The Animal Protection & Rescue League and La Jolla Friends of the Seals will be in court this morning at 9 a.m. before Judge Barton in San Diego Superior Court Dept. 69, 330 W. Broadway St., fifth floor, to seek a preliminary injunction requiring Mayor Jerry Sanders to replace the rope barrier at the Children’s Pool immediately.
