Homes on Soledad to be demolished
The San Diego City Council approved an emergency repair plan to demolish at least three homes at the landslide site on Soledad Mountain Road.
After some arguing about an imminent life-threatening issue if the council failed to act and a storm occurred within the next ten days, the motion was passed on Nov. 20.
Engineers with the city proposed the demolition of four homes, but the owner of one home and his lawyer said his home could be saved.
“We’d like to save Mr. Foroozan’s house,” said Scott Peters, District 1 City Councilman. “I want to also say I’m sorry the city and the citizens got off on the litigation track as fast as they did.”
District 6 Councilwoman Donna Frye said the threat posed by a “mudslide” is too great, and she asked the council to approve an emergency plan that would grade the slope to prevent any more slippage in case of rain.
The rest of the council agreed with Frye, and asked that the engineers save Foroozan’s home, if possible, as he and his lawyer stood in attendance.
“At this point, I agree with Frye,” Peters said. “It’s in the hands of the people on site, and I would not want to expose the city with liability if we save this house, but we will do everything to do that.”

Bird Rock Elementary honored by CBEE
Three local schools are among 11 campuses in the San Diego Unified School District being feted by The California Business for Education Excellence for their academic achievements.
Honorees include Bird Rock Elementary, Sunset View Elementary and High Tech High School.
The CBEE is a group representing member businesses in California.
According to CBEE officials, the award is given to schools that are consistently raising academic achievement and closing achievement gaps for all students, based on data provided by Just for Kids-California.
Awards are broken into two categories: Star Schools and Scholar Schools.
CBEE officials said the local schools are being recognized as Scholar Schools, which boast students who are continually prospering academically without the economic and other challenges of Star Schools.
Scholar Schools must meet specific criteria outlined by CBEE that includes a proficiency rate increase of 30 percentage points from 2004-’07 in English/Language Arts and mathematics, according to CBEE officials.
