Donation for Shores map to be given at ceremony
A preview of the La Jolla Shores map project will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 14, at Kellogg Park, off Camino del Oro.
Special guests will include County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and Daniel Tucker, chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, who will be presenting the Friends of the Map committee with a donation toward the project. Map artists Lynn Reeves and Rick Sparhawk will also attend.
The map project will install a large granite map of La Jolla Shores’ beaches, ocean bed and the marine life it contains, and will also provide additional marine life artwork and a plaque detailing the history of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, who originally made their homes along the stretch of coast.

American Red Cross seeks heroes for awards
The American Red Cross is accepting nominations from local residents, companies and media for the 2007 Real Heroes Breakfast, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center in San Diego.
Nominations for Real Heroes can be submitted to the San Diego/Imperial Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross for any heroic act that occurred between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007. Deadline for nominations is July 13.
The American Red Cross will host a breakfast to honor 11 individuals who have taken action in a time of crisis to help others and have shown extraordinary human compassion. Categories include an adult, animal, company, emergency response operator, fire and rescue member, law enforcement member, lifeguard, media member, medical member, military member or youth.

School says more Francais
Diverse educational opportunities will abound after the San Diego French-American School, 6550 Soledad Mountain Road, has chosen to expand its French as a Foreign Language program, as well as its English as a Second Language program, for the upcoming academic year.
“As we grow, our curriculum evolves, and it is essential that we address the educational needs of our students,” said Virginia Berracasa, communications and admissions officer for the school. “More students are coming from France, so it is necessary to offer additional hours of ESL, and as more non-Francophone students join our school, we can help them learn French more quickly with specific lessons for beginning French students so that they can integrate into the regular classroom.”
The school, which relocated to La Jolla last August, was started by founder and principal André Bordes, who envisioned the opportunity for students to participate in a two-way dual language immersion program.
“We would like the opportunity to be able to help give more students in San Diego this unique opportunity ” an excellent academic program, the knowledge of the French language and the opportunity to learn Spanish as a third language,” Berracasa said. “We will be able to accept more nonspeaking French students, especially after the first grade, adding greater diversity to our student body.”

Residents invited to give input at parking forum
A parking management plan that proposes metered spaces in La Jolla’s village, shores and Bird Rock’s commercial strip will be open for discussion at a community forum Tuesday, June 12, at the recreation center.
The La Jolla Community Parking District Advisory Board presented the plan in March at a town council meeting and was met with strong opposition concerning paid parking.
The forum is meant to discuss all aspects of the plan, not just paid parking, according to an e-mail from Glen Rasmussen, the immediate past president of La Jolla Town Council and the forum moderator.
“Certainly the proposal for paid on-street parking is the most controversial and as a result the meeting may largely focus on that,” Rasmussen said via e-mail. “But this is intended to be a meeting to discuss the proposal as a whole, its rationale and to have the LJPAB here and discuss the proposal with the community in an orderly fashion.”

SOHO celebrates Whaley House anniversary
The Save Our History Organization has announced the grand opening of the Thomas and Anna Whaley House kitchen reconstruction, created using period techniques and materials.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, at 10 a.m. To help christen the kitchen, historical interpreter Jane Beckman will be hosting free cooking demonstrations Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., using mid-1800s-style woodstove cooking techniques. SOHO will also host a historic cooking lecture on Saturday, June 9, at 5 p.m.
