Bishop’s School to honor Ellen Browning Scripps
The Bishop’s School will honor the 170th birthday of the late Ellen Browning Scripps, a prominent La Jollan who founded the facility in 1909, at its 13th annual Ellen Browning Scripps Day, to be held Saturday, Oct. 21.
Scripps settled in La Jolla in 1896 and spent the last 35 years of her life funding projects within the community, including the Woman’s Club, Scripps Memorial Hospital and Children’s Pool.
The event was created and is handled each year by the Bishop’s Office of Alumni Relations and is a chance for alumni, faculty and staff to celebrate the school’s history and accomplishments, according to Suzanne Weiner, Bishop’s marketing and public relations director.
“This event is important because it allows us to intertwine old and new,” Weiner said. “It allows us to come together as a community and reflect on personal Bishop’s experiences that alumni and teachers might have had and the impact it has had on our lives.”
A breakfast buffet, as well as student-led campus tours, face painting, arts and crafts and children’s games on the campus quad will take place in the morning. Student performance arts presentations and visual arts exhibitions will be a part of the event. The alumni committee will also display a memorabilia exhibit.
A special dinner and program, featuring Bishop’s student jazz band, will honor Bonnie St. John, a Bishop’s alum and Harvard graduate, and Jane Bradford, a former 34-year faculty member.
On hand to speak about St. John will be Dorothy Williams, Bishop’s headmistress from 1975 to 1983. St. John will be filmed at the ceremony for the television show “The Edge” with Carlos Watson, formerly of CNN, on which she will appear on Jan. 11. Gideon Rappaport, a current member of Bishop’s English department, will speak about Bradford.
The Bishop’s School is an independent coeducational college preparatory institution, with 725 students ranging from grades seven to 12.

The Lodge will ‘Celebrate the Craft’ of cooking
At a time when fast food is on the rise in America and quickly swallowing up entire communities, The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla has taken the initiative to remind people of the taste of authentic cooking with fresh, organic ingredients.
Thirteen chefs from across the state will be on hand at the Lodge for its fourth annual “Celebrate the Craft” event on Sunday, Oct. 15.
Discussions and cooking demonstrations will take place throughout the day and both a picnic-style lunch and a “family-style feast” dinner will be served on the Arroyo Terrace.
During lunch hours, food stations featuring products from local farm and winery owners will provide samples and people can enjoy musical entertainment by a bluegrass band. At dinner, chefs will serve custom dishes prepared exclusively for the event with locally grown ingredients.
A portion of the proceeds will go to Slow Food, an international educational organization dedicated to promoting ecologically sound food production, biodiversity, reviving the kitchen, bringing back the dining table as a center of pleasure, and preserving ethnic food traditions.
Lunch hours are between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Seating is limited. The Lodge at Torrey Pines is located at 11480 N. Torrey Pines Road.

Volunteers needed to clean least tern sites
The San Diego Audubon Society is looking for volunteers to help maintain nesting sites for the endangered California least terns at Mariners Point, Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers should wear work clothes, including long pants, sturdy shoes and a hat, and sunscreen. Gloves are also recommended. Refreshments will be provided by the San Diego Audubon Society.
Mariners Point is located across from the Bahia Hotel, 998 W. Mission Bay Drive. The clean-up area is at the end of Mariners Way.

City will stop mailing planners’ agendas
In an effort to reduce printing and postage costs, the City of San Diego’s Planning and Community Investment Department will stop sending out community planning group agendas by mail.
The agendas are now posted at www.sandiego.gov/planning, the city’s Web site.
The monthly meeting agendas for the La Jolla Community Planning Association and the University Community Planning Group are posted on the city’s Web site.
The department can also send the agendas to interested persons via e-mail. To receive the monthly notice, e-mail the city at [email protected] and indicate which community planning group agenda you would like to receive.

Military Women’s Luncheon needs RSVPs
The 17th annual Military Women’s Luncheon is accepting RSVPs for its Saturday, Nov. 4 event at the Miramar Officers Club, at Miramar Corps Air Station (MCAS).
Tickets for the luncheon are $20 per person, and the deadline for RSVPs is Friday, Oct. 20.
The topic of discussion for the luncheon is comprehensive combat casualty care center for returning wounded warriors. Capt. Amy Wandel, Medical Corps, USN, and Capt.
