Police suspect Soledad site was for pot-growing
A helicopter flying over the northern slope of Mount Soledad in La Jolla on Tuesday, March 21, discovered a number of solar panels and a water irrigation station that police suspect could be used for marijuana cultivation.
Officers in the helicopter were familiar with the area and alerted patrol officers to further investigate the site, according to Mónica Muãoz, media services manager for the San Diego Police Department.
Although the surrounding area is often set up with similar equipment used by Caltrans to power freeway signs, officers said the solar panels found were not attached to any of the transportation department’s property, Muãoz said.
Police have not yet officially determined if the site was being used to grow pot and no arrests have been made, according to Muãoz.

‘Macho Man’ singing cop arrested in UC
One of the original lead singers for the Village People band was arrested Tuesday, March 24, in University City, after his girlfriend reported that the man was threatening and using physical force against her.
Victor “Macho Man” Willis, 55, who is known as the singing police officer in the 1970’s disco group, was found by police in a car in the 9100 block of Judicial Drive, according to Mónica Muãoz, media services manager for the San Diego Police Department.
He was arrested without incident for spousal abuse and threatening, Muãoz said.
The former singer, songwriter and actor lives in the University City area and has been previously arrested, according to Muãoz.
The March 24 incident resulted in felony charges against Willis, she said.

Rec center will host annual egg hunt
The La Jolla Recreation Center, 615 Prospect St., invites families with children of all ages to join in the spring egg hunt Saturday, April 7, starting at 10 a.m.
The hunt times are divided into age groups:
“¢ 10 a.m. for children 2 and younger
“¢ 10:30 for children ages 3-4
“¢ 11 a.m. for children 5-6
“¢ 11:30 for children 7-9
“¢ Noon for children 10-12
All participants are asked to bring their own baskets.
The center will also have crafts, face painting, food and refreshments, along with the opportunity to take a photo with the Peter Rabbit.
The egg hunt is free. The spring activities in the auditorium will cost $5 at the door. For information call (858) 552-1658.

LJ literacy contest winners announced
Winners of the 2007 Student Writing for Literacy Essay Contest have been announced and include several fourth-grade students from La Jolla.
Overall winner is Julia Cartwright from Bird Rock Elementary. Bird Rock’s Geneva Kotler is also a winner.
Remy Juboori, Rowan Fremont and Ana Gimber are winners from La Jolla Elementary.
From La Jolla Country Day School, Elizabeth Eigner was selected.
A special ceremony for the La Jolla winners will take place at the end of this month at the La Jolla Library, 7555 Draper Ave.
The contest was sponsored by Friends of the San Diego Public Library, San Diego City Schools Library Media Teachers and the San Diego Public Library.

Cancer Society will ‘paint town purple’ May 1
The La Jolla Town Council has proclaimed May 1 “Paint Our Town Purple Day” in honor of the American Cancer Society, which will distribute violet-colored fliers to local businesses to raise awareness about the organization and its services.
The event will also alert the public about La Jolla’s Relay For Life, scheduled for June 23-24 to raise money for cancer research and hosted by the nonprofit corporation, according to Kiley Davis, American Cancer Society volunteer.
“It’s important to get the word out so people know that they have an informational resource,” Davis said. “The society offers support to people in need, and it’s a great place to turn to for anyone in our community for advice on prevention or coping.”
Relay events give cancer survivors and their friends and family a chance to share experiences and comfort each other, while generating money to help find a cure, Davis said.
The La Jolla relay, which raised more than $210,000 last year, will be held at the University of California, San Diego’s track. Teams of 12 people can sign up to participate in the 24-hour activity by e-mailing Randi Shacken or Kim Harvey, [email protected].
