PB?Kiwanis accepting orders for apple fundraiser An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away, but a case of apples from the Pacific Beach Kiwanis will help benefit local community groups. The PB Kiwanis are now accepting orders for the group’s annual Apple Sale fundraiser. A box of 100 premium Red Delicious or Gold Delicious apples is $40, with proceeds donated to a variety of groups. Last year’s event raised more than $11,000 for the Earl & Birdie Taylor Library, Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Mile of Quarters, Meals on Wheels, Jane Lane Kids, Community Service Agency, Pacific Beach Middle School’s Builders Club and funded three $1,000 scholarships for Mission Bay High School seniors. Deadline to order apples is Thursday, Oct. 23. If 100 apples seems like too many, Kiwanis suggest either splitting a box with friends or co-workers. To order, call Jim Moore at (858) 274-9200. The Pacific Beach Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at the Broken Yolk, 1851 Garnet Ave. *** Special Event Committee meeting moved to Monday The Pacific Beach Special Events Committee (PBSEC) has rescheduled its monthly meeting to Monday, Oct. 20. The meeting will be held at the Discover Pacific Beach offices, located at 1503 Garnet Ave. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. and will conduct a wrap-up of the Sept. 7 Brazilian Day Festival, along with discussing PBSEC policies and procedures. For information call Discover Pacific Beach at (858) 273-3303. *** Mission Beach’s Gary Glover succumbs to cancer Gary Glover, an instrumental figure of the beach communities, passed away last week from lung cancer. Glover, a beach-area volunteer who, brought tradition and fun to the hearts of children every year by dressing up as Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny at the Santa Clara Recreation Center during holiday seasons, said Toni Crockett, the center’s director. “We’ve always had the best Santas and the best Easter Bunnies, let’s put it that way. So there was lots of community appreciation. Gary was one of those gentlemen for all the kids…he was always there,” she said. When he wasn’t playing Santa to children, Glover was heavily involved in the Mission Beach community. He attended monthly meetings as a board member of the Mission Beach Recreation and Community Center at Santa Clara Point and served on a city Park and Recreation Department committee as a beach-area representative. Glover has been recognized for his volunteerism by the city Park and Recreation Department over the past several years, Crockett said. He also volunteered as chef of the yearly Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Santa Clara Recreation Center, Crockett said. “He had a lot of really important roles,” she said. “He was a great loss [to] our community.” Wife Pam Glover has also played an important role in the lives of Mission Beach and bay residents over the years as a past member of the Mission Bay Park Committee. She also served on the Mission Beach Precise Planning Board. *** St. Paul’s hosting fall carnival for kids on Saturday St. Paul’s Lutheran School is inviting the public to join its students for an afternoon of fun and games at its fall carnival Saturday, Oct. 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. Kids and their families can enjoy a super-slide, games and prizes, crafts, a dunk tank, face painting and a variety of foods and desserts.
