Sleep forum promises to be an eye-opener
A forum titled “Waking Up to Sleep” will be presented by leading researchers on Friday, Feb. 9, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 10, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Topics covered at the forum include the benefits of taking naps, the advantages and disadvantages of sleep-aid medications and sleep patterns in other species.
Roger Bingham, director of the Science Network, said he hopes that people will “get a better understanding of the search in sleep and fundamental issues that concern them on a daily basis.”
This event will be held at the Salk Institute’s Frederic de Hoffman Auditorium, 10010 N. Torrey Pines Road.
“Waking Up to Sleep” is a production of The Science Network (TSN), Crick-Jacobs Center for Theoretical and Computational Biology and CONNECT. In addition, this event is sponsored by the ResMed Foundation and the Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind at UCSD. The forum open to the public, but registration is required at www.tsntv.org.

LJ Historical Society will listen to ‘Heartbeat’
Volunteers have the opportunity to gather and connect with others who share the same passion for giving back to the community at the La Jolla Historical Society’s next quarterly meeting. “The Heartbeat of La Jolla “” Service Clubs Giving Back to Our Community” will be held on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.
Representatives from prominent community volunteer organizations, such as the La Jolla Soroptimists, La Jolla Kiwanis, Rotary Club of La Jolla and the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club, will describe their functions in the community and how volunteers can become more involved.
“The Heartbeat of La Jolla” will be held at La Jolla Presbyterian Church, 7715 Draper Ave. For info, visit www.ljhs.org or call (858) 459-5335.

Shores Surfing Assoc. holds T-shirt contest
Middle and high school students can show off their artistic talents in a T-shirt design contest sponsored by the La Jolla Shores Surfing Association (LJSSA) as part of the organization’s efforts to promote its seventh annual surf contest. The winner will be awarded $100, in addition to having his or her original artwork used for the surf’s contest T-shirt design.
The top 15 finalists will have their designs displayed at the La Jolla Riford Library during April. Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 2.
Applicants must be 18 years old or younger. Artwork must be original and should be submitted in one color (black ink on white paper is best) and in a format best for producing T-shirts. Preference will be given to original work that depicts kids, surfing, and La Jolla Shores locale.
Entries, which must include age, school and contact information, may be submitted via mail to LJSSA, 8070 La Jolla Shores Drive, PMB No. 446, La Jolla, CA 92037, or e-mailed to [email protected]. The winner will be announced by March 14.
