Seal rope hearing continued one week
A hearing to determine whether a coastal development permit is required for a rope barrier at the Children’s Pool has been continued to Wednesday, April 23, from its original date of April 16.
The rope barrier to separate humans from the beach’s resident harbor seals during pupping season was reinstalled March 11 by court order, after a federal appeals court granted an emergency motion filed by the Animal Protection and Rescue League.
A state court had previously ruled against the rope and mandated that the Children’s Pool waters and beach be returned to their previous condition, before being polluted by seal waste.
The rope barrier is up pending next week’s decision.
Mayor to host town hall meeting on city budget
Mayor Jerry Sanders is coming to Pacific Beach to hold a town hall meeting to discuss and answer questions from the community about the fiscal year 2009 budget.
The meeting will be held Tuesday, April 22, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Earl & Birdie Taylor Library, 4275 Cass St.
The meeting is the fourth of eight town hall meetings organized in each council district to give residents the chance to question Sanders and his staff about the city’s budget.

Student coalition collects for Food Bank
On Friday, April 18, students from Private-Charter United, a group of six area high schools, will do their part to address the issue of hunger in the San Diego community. The group will hold a food drive to benefit the San Diego Food Bank, according to organizers.
Private-Charter United comprises Francis Parker, The Bishop’s School, Horizon, High Tech High, High Tech High International and High Tech High Media Arts.
On Friday, April 18, students will collect canned goods and nonperishable food items at each of these schools. Their goal is to collect more than 2,000 pounds of food, which is equivalent to 600 meals.

LJHS sports score with fund-raising ‘drive’
La Jolla High School’s baseball and softball programs will be the winners of this weekend’s “Cruise 4 UR School” event created by Ford Motor Co. and taking place at Kearny Mesa Ford.
For every test drive of a new car, truck or crossover vehicle, Ford will donate $20 to the school’s sports programs.
The test drives take place between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, at Kearny Mesa Ford, 7303 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
Those who wish to test-drive a vehicle alone must be 18 years of age or older. Younger drivers must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
