
Historical Society to host annual wisteria tea party The Ocean Beach Historical Society will host its annual Wisteria Tea Party gala at noon on Saturday, March 19 at the home of Ned Titlow, 4761 Niagara Ave. The tea party is held at Titlow’s early 1900s home, under the largest Wisteria canopy in Ocean Beach, where guests will be treated to delectables and listen to live music by featured violinist Alicia Previn, Mark Saverino and cellist Mark Sander. OBTC to hear pitch for ‘clean elections’ measure Members of Neighborhoods for Clean Elections plan to make a presentation to the Ocean Beach Town Council on Wednesday, March 23 to stir support for a 2012 city ballot proposal called the San Diego Clean Elections Initiative. Supporters said the initiative would help City Hall be more accountable to voters instead of donors, and facilitate the election of the best candidates — not just those with money. The presentation is set to include a DVD explaining the “Clean Elections” concept more clearly. Silver Gate PE teacher earns statewide honor Geoff McCloud of Silver Gate Elementary School has been named California Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Undy 5000 5K returns to fight colon cancer The second annual San Diego Undy 5000 5K run returns to Mission Bay/De Anza Cove on Saturday, March 19, 2011 to help bring greater awareness to colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The event begins at 8 a.m. The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA), a national patient advocacy organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colon cancer, will host the event.The goal of the event is to educate the public about colon cancer, promote screenings and to get people talking about the deadly, but preventable, disease. This event also raises much needed funds to support and build the CCA’s national and local patient support and public awareness programs. The 5k run takes place at 2750 North Mission Bay Drive. The San Diego club placed in the categories of: all sports for cancer, Americanization; civic affairs; publicity, scholarship and the coveted All-Around Club award. Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California is a non-profit organization dedicated to Joao Rodrigues Cabrilho, the Portuguese navigator who discovered California. Members of the organization are dedicated to its principles of Americanization, civic affairs, membership and scholarship, while promoting their Portuguese heritage. Active membership is open to individuals of Portuguese descent who reside in California and are 18 years of age or older.
