Man drowns when boat capsizes off state beach A 30-foot fishing boat carrying 23 illegal immigrants capsized off the shores of Torrey Pines State Beach on Saturday, Jan. 16 around 4:30 a.m. Twenty-three people (22 men and one woman) were seen in the boat, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. One person drowned and another was in critical condition. Six people were transported to the hospital, and eight people are still unaccounted for, according to Luque. Nine of the people on the boat were turned over to Border Patrol. Border Patrol agents had been monitoring the boat via helicopter. More than 100 federal, county and city personnel responded to the call, according to Luque. The fire department sent 50 people, and 25 lifeguards responded. Meeting slated to explore school options La Jolla parents are invited to attend a meeting to discuss two issues — whether to form an official cluster, and options for dealing with the district’s financial crisis — today, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at La Jolla High School’s Parker Auditorium, 750 Nautilus St. Attorney Greg Moser will speak. Moser helped La Jolla High gain some autonomy for its curriculum from the district in early 2000. A cluster, which is an official coalition between a high school and the middle and elementary schools that feed into it, helps schools present a unified front before the school district. The La Jolla cluster would include La Jolla High, Muirlands Middle School, Bird Rock Elementary, La Jolla Elementary and Torrey Pines Elementary.
