On your mark for Junior Olympics
The 17th annual Junior Olympics for La Jolla boys and girls ages 5 to 12 is Saturday, May 17 at La Jolla High’s Edwards Stadium, 750 Nautilus St. Check-in begins at 7:15 a.m., with the first events starting at 8:30 a.m.
Students from seven La Jolla elementary schools will compete on an obstacle course, in a softball throw and in track events. The Fastest Boys and Fastest Girls relay team races will be followed by the Fastest Boy and Fastest Girl in La Jolla events.
The Junior Olympics is hosted by the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla.

Council to hear proposed 3-story Bird Rock project
The project that sparked La Jolla’s No Third Story campaign will have a new hearing to approve or deny an application for several permits in city council chambers next Thursday, May 22 at 9 a.m.
Mark Lyon and Associates is proposing to construct a 20,507-square-foot, three-story site called The Bird Rock Project at 5702 La Jolla Blvd. The development would contain 11 residential and seven commercial units and have two levels of belowground parking. There is also a proposed loading area.
The community resisted the project previously, which is located on a .37-acre site and is in Zone 4 of the La Jolla Planned District within the La Jolla Community Planning Area.

Riford will be rockin’ at open house
The Riford Adult Center will hold its annual “Rockin’ at the Riford” party Sunday, May 18, from noon to 4 p.m.
The open house will include live music, refreshments from French Gourmet, a silent auction and raffle and other activities, such as palm reading and chair massage.
Admission is $10, with the proceeds going to new programs and capital improvements at the center, which does not receive any government funding but relies on community contributions and grants plus membership and activity fees.
The Riford Center offers educational and social activities for adults age 50 and older as well as fitness classes, a book club and special events.
