UCCA will host cleanup
The University City Community Association is calling for volunteers to help beautify South UC on Saturday, May 13.
Participants will meet just before 8 a.m. at the Swanson Pool parking lot at Standley Recreation Center, 3585 Governor Drive, and work until noon. Volunteers are asked to bring tools to remove overgrown weeds, including rakes, shovels, brooms or pickaxes.
The cleanup is being co-sponsored by I Love a Clean San Diego and Keep California Beautiful.
For information call Andy Freeburn, (858) 336-4437, or [email protected].

Relay for Life calls for participants
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is seeking participants for the 2006 Relay for Life, a 24-hour celebration for cancer survivors to be held June 24-25 at the University of California, San Diego’s (UCSD) North Track. The relay involves team members switching off for continuous walking or jogging around the track, with donations to the ACS pledged for each lap or the entire event.
Participants are asked to either join an existing team or register a new team by May 15 by calling (619) 682-7452. Campsites will be available for teams.
In addition, organizers are looking for 100 cancer survivors to join the celebration, which includes a survivor “victory lap,” bands, games, food and a kids’ zone. There will also be a luminaria ceremony to honor those affected by the disease. Survivors who pre-register will be given T-shirts.
To pre-register, e-mail [email protected] or call (619) 682-7452. Visit www.acsevents.org/relay/ca/lajolla.

Mail carriers will make deliveries and pick-ups
On Saturday, May 13, postal carriers are joining the fight against hunger in San Diego through an effort dubbed “Stamp Out Hunger!” Residents throughout San Diego can leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery.
This event stands as the nation’s largest single-day food drive and is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, United States Postal Service, AFL-CIO, United Way, Campbell Soup and the San Diego Food Bank. For those who would prefer not to leave the food out, or who have post office boxes, food donations may be taken to your local post office.
For more information call the San Diego Food Bank toll free, (866) 350-FOOD, or visit www.nalc.org or www.sandiegofoodbank.org.
