Library opens page on summer reading program
The summer reading program at the La Jolla Riford Library Center begins Friday, June 15. Until Aug 15, children and teens can attend exciting programs and enter prize drawings.
“We want to keep the kids coming to the library during the summer and encourage them to read,” said Laurie Bailey, Youth Services librarian. “The children write down the titles of the books they have read and for every ten books, they get a bag of prizes.”
This year’s theme for children and families, “GET A CLUE,” includes a Harry Potter-themed magic show. The title of the teens’ program is “YNK (You Never Know) @ your library!”
There is also a preschool story time every Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Readers can pick up their reading logs at the Youth Services desk starting Friday, June 15.
The La Jolla Riford Library Center & Jacobs Annex of the San Diego Public Library is located at 7555 Draper Ave. For more information, visit www.lajollalibrary.org or call (858) 552-1657 for a full schedule of events.

Congregation Beth Israel will welcome Rabbi Berk
A new Senior Rabbi will join Congregation Beth Israel beginning July 1, bringing with him a rich tradition and background from across the state.
Michael Berk began his rabbinical career in 1980 at the Temple of Emanu El in San Jose, and later moved on to serve as Senior Rabbi at Temple of Beth Torah in Ventura, Calif. and Beth Sholom Temple in Santa Monica, according to Lesley Mills, Congregation Beth Israel’s development director.
“It’s just very important to our synagogue to have community,” Mills said. “A synagogue is like a second home, and the rabbi and clergy team bring tremendous continuity to that community “” he will help lead that desire to build community and connectivity.”
Berk, who has a political science degree from University of California, Berkeley, was selected by the congregation’s board of directors and elected by a majority of the membership, according to Mills.
Established in 1861, Congregation Beth Israel is San Diego’s oldest and largest Jewish synagogue, with a membership of 1,300 families. The synagogue is located at 9001 Towne Centre Drive.
