Stabbing of agent in OB said to be gang-related An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was stabbed multiple times in an apparent gang-motivated attack near the Ocean Beach Pier early Saturday morning, according to investigators with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD). The 29-year-old agent, whose name has not been released, was with his wife shortly before 12:30 a.m. when a group of six people approached them in the 5000 block of Newport Avenue, according to Lt. Andrew Mills of the SDPD gang unit. “The suspects hit them up, which is a gang challenge, asking, ‘Where are you from?’, a typical gang behavior,” said Mills. “These are known gang members from San Diego.” The couple, walking on Newport Avenue, became involved in an argument with the suspects, prompting one of the alleged gang members — an 18-year-old woman — to stab the agent several times in the lower back, according to Mills. The alleged stabber was identified as Carolina Resendez. The agent’s wounds are not considered to be life-threatening, said Mills. A bystander flagged down officers from the state Department of Fish and Game, who arrested the alleged gang members — four adults and two juveniles. Resendez will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, as will Jorge Guevera, Yahiro Villapondo and Miguel Deleon, said Mills. The agent was taken to University of California, San Diego for treatment. Police seek identity of Midway store robber The San Diego Police Department is seeking information about the identity of a suspect who robbed a business in the Midway area. On Sept. 14, 2008, a Hispanic male went into the Barnett Adult Superstore in the 3600 block of Barnett Ave. and pulled a black semiautomatic handgun from his pocket at about 4:30 a.m., according to detectives. The suspect pointed the gun at the clerk and demanded cash from the registers. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 25-30 years old, 5’8″, with a heavy build. He was wearing a dark beanie cap and black jacket. He reportedly fled the store on foot. Anyone with information is urged to call the SDPD robbery unit at (619) 531-2299 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. Even anonymous tips may earn a reward of up to $1,000, according to investigators. Residents may also submit tips by visiting www.sdcrimestoppers.com. No one was injured in the robbery.
