Drunk driver runs red light in UC, kills woman
A Poway man who was legally over the blood-alcohol limit ran a red light Friday, July 13, crashing into an SUV traveling east on La Jolla Village Drive and leaving one woman dead and another injured.
John Sedej, 45, was driving a 2001 Acura southbound on Genesee Avenue around 1:20 a.m. when he failed to acknowledge the traffic signal at the La Jolla Village Drive intersection in front of the Westfield UTC shopping mall, Det. Dan Wall of San Diego Police Department’s traffic division said.
Sedej’s vehicle hit the driver side of a 2000 Ford Expedition that contained four women, ages 22 through 28, from the Logan Heights area, Wall said. The 28-year-old front-seat passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, police reports said.
Both drivers were injured and transported to the hospital and were released with minor injuries that same evening, Wall said.
Charges of driving under the influence and manslaughter are pending against Sedej, who was also driving above the Genesee Avenue speed limit, according to Wall.
