New and improved rides at Bike Garage in Pacific Beach

If you’re looking for a new bike, or have one that needs repairs, you ought to consider parking/purchasing it at the Bike Garage.
Now open for three months, Bike Garage at 4645 Cass St., Suite 105 on the ground floor, co-owned by Ismael Bohme and Robbie Robertson, was created to serve all of Pacific Beach’s cycling needs.
A locally owned and operated bicycle specialty shop serving Pacific Beach and environs, Bike Garage’s goal is to provide a friendly, welcoming and expert resource for all cycling enthusiasts, from novice riders and commuters to life-long riders.
Why the moniker Bike Garage?
“Ismael started out three years ago in the garage of his house, just servicing other people’s bikes,” said Robertson. “Then we found this spot.”
Bike Garage prides itself on being the best and most accessible source for all your cycling needs, states the company’s website. Whether you’re looking for your new dream bike or for repairs, upgrades, maintenance or a complete rebuild for a bike you already own, or just an afternoon rental to cruise along the beach or check out some trails, Bike Garage is a perfect choice, claims the website.
The cycle shop provides other things you won’t find elsewhere, like pick-up and drop-off services for bike repairs and maintenance, restoration of used bicycles to reduce waste and promotion of a sustainable community.
Bike Garage also caters to short- and longer-term rentals, while hosting events and rides to help bring together the local cycling community and create new friendships. Bohme noted the Bike Garage gives good deals to tourists and temporary residents by selling bikes to them for say a month or more, then buying them back when they leave.
There is one more thing Bike Garage specializes in that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else locally: selling kits to transform traditional bikes into electric ones, helping riders travel further, faster with a battery-charged electric assist.
“We offer a reasonable, entry-level electric kit, which costs about $750, to covert a regular bike into an ebike with about a 40-mile range,” Robertson said.
“You bring your own bike in, and we’ll sell you the kit and install it,” said Bohme, who noted he just did an electric conversion for a vacation rental manager who wanted to be able to “hop from home to home without parking (his car) everywhere.”
Bohme and Robertson are something of a cycling tag team. Bohme, the engineer, knows the ins and outs of repairs and servicing. An artist formerly working in TV production, Robertson is the promotional end of the business, handling the website, social media and any and all graphics work.
Discussing repairs, Bohme said Bike Garage has all the tools — and the expertise — to repair anything cycle related.
The most common repair?
“Flats and chains,” pointed out Bohme, noting a cyclist can help prevent problems doing regular maintenance, like changing tire tubes annually.
The Bike Garage itself is crammed full of every cycling accoutrement imaginable, selling seats, baskets, sprockets, chains, tires, tire pumps, wheels, etc. There even is a long, and fun, line of horns for kid’s bikes.
“We have practically everything that anybody would ask for,” noted Bohme.
Who are Bike Garage’s customers?
“Mostly locals,” replied Bohme. “We’re not on a main street, so we don’t have a lot of foot traffic.”
Robertson talked about what makes Bike Garage special.
“We try to offer a lot of items for people to customize their bikes, make them more personal,” he said. Bike Garage Where: 4645 Cass St. Suite 105 Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Info: bikegaragesd.com, 858-257-7375.
