Several local scholastic boys tennis teams have served up winning starts to the season.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights and head coach Jose Ruelas are off to a 6-1 overall start, 5-0 in league play. The victories have included wins over rival La Jolla Country Day School and Canyon Crest.
Key players to date include senior Scott Rogers, playing well at number one singles, and freshman Robert Xie at both singles and doubles.
Ruelas noted that sophomore Matthias Villwock has been a nice surprise, too.
“We continue to improve in doubles and really need to work harder and be more intense on the court if we will challenge for a league or Division III title,” Ruelas said.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings and head coach Lenny Lee sport an
8-1 record after completing the toughest part of their schedule ” the non-Western League matches against three of the top Division I schools (Rancho Bernardo, La Costa Canyon, and Poway). La Jolla was victorious over La Costa Canyon and Rancho Bernardo but suffered its only loss to Poway.
According to Lee, Kyle Van Buskirk and Daniel Lapidus have surfaced as La Jolla’s strongest singles players, but the team also has depth.
“I think we have four or five very solid doubles teams being led by Theo Lee-Niko Karnopp, Trey Van Buskirk-PJ Woolley, Max Einhorn-Harper Allan, and Erwin Hernandez-Chris Langbort,” Lenny Lee noted.
