There will be a free public ceremony and presentation today, May 8, to honor NASA climate scientist James E. Hansen.
Hansen is the recipient of the 2008 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. He received the award based on his contributions to climate research.
The announcement was made through the William Nierenberg Family and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
Hansen is a leading authority on global climate research.
The Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest was created to honor the memory of William A. Nierenberg, director of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography for 21 years.
A bronze medal and a $25,000 prize are awarded each year for outstanding contributions to science in the public interest.
The ceremony and presentation will be Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m., at the Forum Theater of the La Jolla Playhouse on the UCSD campus. The public is invited to attend the brief ceremony. It will include a presentation by Hansen titled “The Threat of the Planet: The Dark and Bright Sides of Global Warming.”
Past recipients of the award include newsman Walter Cronkite, nature filmmaker Sir David Attenborough and primatologist Dame Jane Goodall.
Admission is free and open to the public. Reservations are not necessary but seating and parking are limited.
