It’s amazing how many music legends call San Diego home. These days, it’s not unusual to spot the likes of Ace Frehley (KISS) or Rob Halford (Judas Priest) on local streets, while virtuosos like Johnny Vernazza, who played on hits like Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled around and Fell in Love” can be found regularly playing in area nightspots. Such is the case with pianist Lester Abrams, who performs at Eddie V’s on May 11. A terrific jazz artist, Abrams has also had a lengthy career composing music for films, with his tunes heard in the likes of “South Central” and the “40-Year-Old Virgin.” His greatest claim to fame, to date, however, is his work as arranger on the Grammy Award-winning Doobie Brothers hit, “What A Fool Believes” and as co-writer of the classic song “Minute by Minute.” Playing a set of piano-based jazz at this gig, the chance to hear music from such an esteemed musician in an intimate setting like Eddie V’s should not be passed up. Lester Abrams: Friday, May 11 at Eddie V’s, 1270 Prospect St. 8 p.m. www.eddiev.com.
