We’re now forty years past the original ska movement, 25 past the first revival and still new groups emerge in the genre that capture the imagination. Such is the case with High Tide, who perform at the 710 Beach Club on Nov. 7. Not afraid to mess with a formula, the group has recently recorded an acoustic ska album, but aficionados of the more traditional, “reggae crossed with punk energy” sounds of ska, will find High Tide live to be the perfect soundtrack for an evening of skankin’. High Tide: Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 p.m. at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 21 and up. The San Diego Jazz Musicians’ Guild continues its policy of adventurous booking with a performance from guitarist Gilbert Garcia’s Afro Latin Jazz Project at Tango Del Rey, on Nov. 8. Specializing in the music of Cuba, Garcia’s combo strives for an authentic sound, from the Spanish language vocals to the blend of accordions and guitars. Garcia’s music is the very definition of the word “rhythm,” with a beat that’s made for dancing. Gilbert Garcia’s Afro Latin Jazz Project: Sunday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. at Tango Del Rey, 3567 Del Rey St. All ages. Now six years old – an eternity by music standards – SweetTooth, who perform at Brick by Brick on Nov. 10, remains one of the most popular rock bands on the local club circuit. One likely reason: they feature one of the hottest guitar player’s in town, Matt Silvia, ensuring the band’s performances rarely rate below incendiary. Best of all, the players mine a wealth of influences from classic rock to other local groups, such as Pinback, resulting in original songs that will stick with you long after the performance is over. Sweet Tooth: Tuesday Nov. 10, 6:30 p.m. at Brick By Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 21 and up. $5. Libraries are often thought of as sanctuaries of quiet, but many of the branches, including the Pacific Beach location, also have arts programs that showcase music. On Nov. 11, the library will host a concert by Bossa Nova guitarist Tony Lasley. Lasley has released six albums to date, the latest, Getz/Gilberto, a note for note remake of the acclaimed 1964 Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto collaboration. A truly gifted player, Lasley’s music appeals to jazz fans of all stripes, though those who like their sounds with a Latin flare, will be particularly pleased. Tony Lasley: Wednesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m. at the Pacific Beach Library, 4275 Cass St. All ages. Mixing elements of punk, surf and rock ’n’ roll, Berkley’s The Atom Age, who perform at O’Connell’s on Nov. 13, come close to channeling some of the energy once kicked up by our own much missed RFTC. Nothing flashy with this quintet, just plenty of sax backed, high voltage tunes with catchy garage-punk choruses meant to give the eardrums a workout and get the adrenaline pumping. The Atom Age: Friday, Nov.13, 8 p.m. at O’Connell’s, 1310 Morena Blvd. 21 and up.
