Motherhood or motherjob? While studies attempt to quantify the job, scope and wage of being a mom, Point Loma Mom Veronical Rangel will be honored this Mother’s Day, along with another 49 of San Diego’s Best Mom’s of 2006.
The 50 Best Mom’s award is decided in an essay contest sponsored by Time Warner Cable that allows the children of local mothers to write about the dedication and hard work that their moms do. Rangel’s daughter Teresa, a sophomore at Point Loma High School, wrote the essay that earned Veronica the recognition.
In her essay, Teresa writes: “[My mom] was always there when I needed to talk to someone, she hears all I have to say and doesn’t judge me. I’m happy to say that my mom is the Best Mom in San Diego.”
The judges agreed. Rangel’s essay was one of fifty chosen out of over 3,800 nominations from sons and daughters throughout San Diego. Essays were chosen for the writer’s ability to communicate their mother’s unique care and dedication. For Teresa, her mother’s sacrifice was one of her most important reasons for writing the essay.
“I think the most important thing about the experience is that I can show my mom that all her work has paid off,” Teresa said.
Veronica Rangel will be one of 50 honorees that will be recognized at a luncheon given this Saturday at the La Jolla Hyatt Regency. The luncheon will feature guest speaker Jane Clifford, Family Ties editor for the Union-Tribune and awards presented by Time Warner Cable and Channel 933 FM.
This is the fifth year that Time Warner Cable has sponsored this Mother’s Day event as an opportunity to recognize the hard work of San Diego’s local mothers, grandmothers, adopted moms and aunts.
According to a study released May 3, a full-time, stay-home mother would earn $134,121 if paid for all her work, a salary similar to a judge or marketing director, reports Reuters.
The survey calculated her earnings based on the 10 top jobs respondents claimed most accurately form a mother’s role: housekeeper, day-care teacher, cook, computer operator, laundry machine operator, janitor, facilities manager, van driver, chief executive and psychologist.
Sponsor Time Warner Cable will give each of the 50 winning mothers a gift bag worth more than $700 and a luncheon at the La Jolla Hyatt Regency. In addition, the authors will be awarded a new computer, and the students’ teachers will receive a $250 gift card for supplies in their classrooms.
The luncheon will begin 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. A list of the awarded moms and students can be seen at www.twcsd.com. For more information, call (619) 540-6611.
