Mission Bay teams wrap up CIF competition

Mission Bay High springs sports teams recently wrapped up CIF competition. Track and field The Bucs sent five athletes to the CIF Prelims meet including City League champ Nick Archer (high jump, triple jump); Jesus Hernandez (110m hurdles champion), Brooklyn Grooms (pole vault); TK Berhe and Alec Pletogher. Only Archer, who hit a season-best 43’00.5 in the triple jump, was able to make the CIF Finals. Archer took eighth in Division II, giving Mission Bay its only points. “This was a great year for our track team as we secured back-to-back league titles,” head coach Danny Perez said. “We will move forward to the Eastern League to take on stiff competition.”
Next year’s schedule will include the likes San Diego, Serra, Morse, Saints, Our Lady of Peace, Hoover and La Jolla. “We are riding our undefeated streak as we last lost to San Diego High by two points back in 2016,” Perez noted.
“I’d like to thank our coaching staff: Greg Farrar, Dane Roman, Marshawn Cherry, Jim Cerveny, Tony Griswold, and Barry Dancher for all the hard work and dedication they gave to the team,” Perez went on to say. “Our school administration, Jorge Palacios (athletic director); Nella Landa (vice principal), and Ernie Remillard (principal); for supporting us in every way we have asked for. Looking forward to many more great years at Mission Bay and hopefully we bring home a CIF title soon.” Softball
Mission Bay finished its season, under head coach Vince Ichihara, with a record of 19-6. Ending one of its best seasons in school history, the Bucs fell to Helix 5-2 in CIF action earlier this month.
Mission Bay had entered the post-season as the No. 6 seed. Despite the loss, nearly winning 20 games in the season showed that this was one talented group of young ladies. Editor’s note: With summer around the corner and the high schools closing down for a few months, we’re looking for some great summer sports stories in the Mission Bay area.
