For a pair of Mission Bay spring sports teams, this past season turned out to be a hit. On the baseball diamond, the Bucs under head coach Dennis Pugh went 16-11 and finished as co-league champs with Clairemont.
Although Mission Bay did not make the playoffs due to the power rankings, it was still an overall good season.
According to Pugh, this was the program’s first winning season in nearly a decade, giving the team something to build on.
All-League players included Joey Witkowski and Parker St. Germain on the first team, and Brad Palmer and Connor Bailey on the second team. Honorable mention honors went to Aiden Young.
“We have six starters coming back next year, but we need to keep improving in all areas, as we are going into a tougher league to avoid the power-ranking fiasco we had this year,” Pugh commented. “A good incoming ninth-grade group will help get the program going in a positive direction. The whole culture of the program is being improved as we try to get back to the once-proud tradition established in years past.” Softball
On the softball diamond, Mission Bay finished a great season at 19-10-2 under head coach Vince Ichihara.
The Bucs dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to La Jolla this past Saturday in the CIF Division IV championship.
“We made a run in the playoffs having to come from the loser’s bracket after a tough 2-0 loss,” Ichihara stated. “We then beat No. 7 seed Calipatria 9-0, No. 2 seed Mar Vista 15-0, No. 3 seed Mission Vista 20-5, and No. 1 seed Coronado 10-2 to make it to the final.”
According to Ichihara, the girls had a historic season in winning their league for the first time in 20-plus years, along with making an appearance in the finals of the San Diego City section.
Mission Bay had several players make first-team and second-team All-League.
They included: Cassidy West (first-team and Pitcher of the Year), Maya Cota (first-team), Serena Castro (first-team), Cheyenne Chavez (first-team), Paige Parkhill (second-team), Catalina Griffiths (second-team), and Keionna Valverde-Flores (second-team).
“The entire team except for one senior, Jackie Macias, is returning next season, so we are very excited about the future of the softball program,” Ichihara added.
