Mission Bay advanced against Torrey Pines on a buzzer beater by Boogie Ellis as the Bucs won the quarter final game, 64-63, in the National Division of the Torrey Pines Holiday Basketball Classic in late December. The Buccaneers beat O’Dea, 87-80, in the semi-finals, but lost the National Division championship game to Shadow Mountain, 82-62. With seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Falcons Bryce Pope connected on two free throws to give Torrey Pines a 63-62 lead. The ball was then quickly inbounded to Ellis who scored at the buzzer to give Mission Bay the win. Despite suffering a wrist injury earlier in the game, Ellis came through in the clutch.
“We stepped up huge today everyone knows in the county,” Ellis said. “My job is to focus on my teammates and play basketball.”
High scorers for Mission Bay were Andre Scott, 20, Ron Latting, 15, Savaughn Davis, 12, and Jaymaree Norton, 11.
“Boogie has made the right plays tonight,” said Mission Bay head coach Marshawn Cherry. “[Boogie’s] wrist got banged up, but he moved the ball around to our squad and contributed in tonight’s game. “Latting had 25 and 15 points in the last two games of this tournament and came back with another strong performance tonight, he is one of the most underrated guards in California.”
